Power Plant Decommissioning & Demolition

At one of the most high-profile power facility decommissioning projects in California, Citadel EHS (Citadel) was selected to perform environmental project management, hazardous materials surveys and abatement oversight and monitoring, and industrial hygiene exposure sampling associated with the hazardous materials abatement and demolition of a decommissioned nuclear power electrical generating station.

Citadel performed the following specific services:

• Review of abatement/demolition contractor’s project submittals, including workplans and regulatory notifications,
• Surveys of additional hazardous materials identified or made accessible during the work,
• Interface with regulatory agencies and inspectors,
• Abatement/removal oversight and monitoring for asbestos, lead, and other hazardous materials/regulated wastes, including regulatory compliance and ambient air monitoring,
• Assisted with waste characterizations,
• Performed employee exposure monitoring (industrial hygiene) for hazards such as asbestos, lead, welding fumes, hexavalent chromium, and silica,
• Consulting on other environmental issues associated with the project, and
• Provided project closure reports.

The project was at a site with a higher degree of safety and background check requirements than normally encountered, even in other heavy industrial facilities. Citadel seamlessly integrated into the site’s and Client’s safety culture and assisted the Client in monitoring contractor compliance with these requirements. Citadel is proud to have been entrusted to take such an important role in a unique project.
