Santa Susana Field Lab

The Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL), located at 5800 Woolsey Canyon Road in Canoga Park, California, is a former U.S. government energy research and development facility. Although industrial operations ceased in 2006, the site contains residual radionuclide, soil, groundwater, and stormwater contamination. The responsible parties - Boeing, NASA, and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) - are conducting a comprehensive environmental cleanup to support long-term site restoration and safe future use.

Citadel EHS provided industrial hygiene and health and safety consulting services to Jacobs in support of remediation activities at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL), a former U.S. government energy research and development facility undergoing environmental cleanup. Historical site operations resulted in contamination of soil, groundwater, and site media, including metals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), PCBs, dioxins/furans, and radionuclides. The project supported investigation and remediation activities associated with the Area I Burn Pit (AIBP) and other areas of the site.

Citadel provided on-site industrial hygiene support during earth-moving and remediation activities to help protect workers from potential exposures to airborne contaminants. Services included real-time personal exposure monitoring, direct-reading air monitoring, airborne dust monitoring, VOC monitoring, and collection of air samples for metals analysis, including arsenic and lead. Citadel also provided interpretation of monitoring results, recommendations regarding work practices and personal protective equipment (PPE), and ongoing support to site health and safety personnel.

The project was performed in an environment where radiological concerns associated with excavated materials were actively being evaluated as part of the overall site remediation program. Citadel worked closely with Jacobs and site health and safety personnel to support worker protection efforts, exposure assessment activities, and safe execution of remediation work in areas containing multiple contaminants of concern.

In addition to field monitoring activities, Citadel prepared exposure monitoring reports, summarized laboratory analytical results, and provided recommendations to support ongoing remediation planning and worker health and safety decision-making.
