Sensor Systems Aerospace Facility

Citadel EHS provides multidisciplinary environmental, industrial hygiene, and building sciences consulting for an active aerospace manufacturing facility in Chatsworth, California. Citadel’s involvement began with environmental due diligence and expanded as investigations identified chlorinated volatile organic compound (VOC) impacts, including TCE and PCE, requiring further evaluation of soil, soil vapor, groundwater, and potential vapor intrusion pathways. The engagement has since evolved into a comprehensive program addressing both legacy environmental conditions and occupational and facility-related concerns.

Citadel has supported the client through Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, subsurface characterization, indoor air and vapor intrusion evaluations, regulatory coordination, remedial planning, and implementation of a full-scale Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) system. The selected remediation strategy combines active treatment of VOC-impacted soil vapor with monitored natural attenuation and groundwater monitoring. Citadel continues to operate, monitor, and optimize the SVE system; through June 2026, approximately 239 pounds of TCE and PCE had been removed, while groundwater monitoring indicated significant lateral attenuation with no observed increase in plume size or off-site migration.

Citadel’s work at the facility also extends beyond subsurface remediation. Following recurring rainwater intrusion, the Industrial Hygiene & Safety team conducted a moisture and microbial investigation, including moisture measurements, infrared evaluation, fungal surface sampling, and assessment of impacted building materials. Citadel identified areas requiring corrective action and developed recommendations for controlled removal, microbial remediation, and follow-up verification. The Building Sciences team also performed asbestos Operations & Maintenance consulting, including bulk sampling and identification of asbestos-containing building materials, and provided recommendations for managing those materials during ongoing operations, maintenance, and future renovation activities.

Through this long-term engagement, Citadel provides the client with a single, integrated resource for environmental remediation, industrial hygiene, hazardous materials, and facility health and safety challenges. This multidisciplinary approach helps protect employees, maintain regulatory compliance, reduce long-term environmental liability, and allow facility improvements and manufacturing operations to continue while complex environmental conditions are actively managed.
